Letter
from the President
|
Dear Chamber members,
OPD encourages neighborhood
watch!
Oakland Police Captain Toribio
wants you to know that car
burglaries, home and commercial
burglaries have increased double
digits since June 1 in Service
Area 1 (to find out what beat
you're in visit
www.oaklandpolice.com, and
then click on "Area Command
Beats Map").
For auto burglaries, the hardest
hit community policing beats are
3X, 4X, 8X, 9X, 12Y and 13Z. The
following vehicles are the most
commonly broken into: Toyota
Corolla, Honda Accord, Toyota
Camry, and Honda Civic. For
commercial burglaries, the
hardest hit beats are 2Y, 6X,
10X, 10Y, 11X, 12X and 12Y.
Currently, OPD is doing analysis
of the crimes to determine any
patterns or trends.
Please spread the alert that
residents and businesses should
report all suspicious activity
and crimes to OPD, as well as
harden targets, that is, do not
leave things of value in
vehicles, lock doors and
windows, take precautions.
Above all else, pay attention to
what's going on around you and
pay extra attention to strangers
in your neighborhoods. Please
help us spread the word to
Merchant Watch groups,
Neighborhood Watch Block
Captains, Yahoo groups, etc.
Bay Bridge closure
Remember that from 8 p.m. on
Thursday, Sept. 3 to 5 a.m. on
Tuesday, Sept. 8, the Bay Bridge
will be closed for construction.
Crews will be replacing a
section of the bridge east of
the Yerba Buena Island tunnel to
connect the bridge to a
temporary detour. The work is
part of the Bay Bridge Seismic
Safety Projects, designed to
bring the structure up to
current earthquake standards.
While the Bay Bridge was closed
during Labor Day weekends in
2006 and 2007, vital and complex
seismic retrofit work was
successfully completed ahead of
schedule. Taking advantage of
historically light traffic on
the bridge during the holiday
weekend helps minimize
disruptions to motorists,
residents and businesses.

God Bless America!
