Letter from the President
Dear members and friends,

City Council needs to hear your opinion!

Tonight, Councilmembers will decide on 2 important issues which affect economic development in Oakland and the region. Please take a few minutes today to contact elected officials or attend the meeting at City Hall starting at 7 pm tonight.

Parking
The Chamber asked for enforcement hours to return to 6 pm.  We also want the rate to return to $1.50 per hour. In the long term, the Chamber requests an audit of the parking control division to determine the cost-benefit analysis of parking enforcement. Finally, we believe examining the sales tax revenue during the summer months will validate merchant claims of declining business due to changes in parking policies.  Share your opinion directly by speaking out!

BART's Oakland Airport Connector
Some City Councilmembers are trying to prevent more than 2,500 new jobs from being created because they dislike BART's Oakland Airport Connector. This project is designed & funded. Bids have been submitted.  Construction will begin in January 2010.

Read the opinion printed by the Oakland Tribune on Saturday, October 3.

Let Councilmembers know you believe investing in Oakland is a good thing.

God Bless America!

Joseph Haraburda, President and CEO

DON'T MISS THESE OUTSTANDING CHAMBER EVENTS:

Inside Oakland Featuring Oakland City Attorney John Russo Oct. 16

Oakland City Attorney John Russo will join us on Oct. 16th to discuss a major, new initiative: the Special Prosecution Team, a new criminal law unit created in partnership with the District Attorney. Three criminal attorneys in the City Attorney's Office will focus on misdemeanor quality-of-life crimes, which have not always been prosecuted in Oakland in the past. It's based on the Broken Windows theory - that small crimes bring down the quality of life of the community and invariably contribute to more serious crime.

Russo will also outline the Annual Report for the City Attorney's Office which he likens to a shareholders report for taxpayers and businesses in the city - review and analysis of litigation trends, financial results and new initiatives. Learn more and RSVP.

A Special October Mixer Oct. 22

October's Chamber Mixer will be something special indeed. Hosted by Chiodo Art Development at 1933 Peralta Street in West Oakland, the monthly event will feature a look at the newly unveiled portion of the "Remember Them: Champions for Humanity" monument depicting Maya Angelou and Ruby Bridges, and will give attendees an inside look into the rest of the monument being created by local sculptor and Chamber Board member Mario Chiodo.

When complete, the monument will be the largest bronze sculpture west of the Mississippi and is earmarked for Fox Square Park in the newly developed Uptown section of Oakland. You can learn more about the monument here.

Join us & be a part of history in the making! Learn more and RSVP here.
